DWCS 2026 Week 8 Results: Staines Makes History, Four UFC Contracts & Illegal-Knee Controversy

Dana White's Contender Series 2026 Week 8 lost a fight before the card even started, then somehow delivered four finishes, four UFC contracts and one of the strangest contract announcements of the season.

George Staines closed the September 29 event at the Meta APEX in Las Vegas with the first slam knockout in Dana White's Contender Series history. Aieza Bertolso opened the show with a first-round submission. Ian Escuza stopped Luca Borando in only 32 seconds, although an illegal knee during the finishing sequence immediately complicated the result. In between, Adama Diop upset previously unbeaten Zaurbek Sabanov despite earning an unusually harsh review from Dana White afterward.

By the end of the night, all four winners — Staines, Diop, Escuza and Bertolso — had UFC contracts.

The originally scheduled featherweight fight between Ilias Bulaid and Erick Visconde did not take place after Bulaid became ill following the weigh-ins. Their Bulaid vs. Visconde matchup has instead been moved to Week 10.

The main event barely lasted a minute.

George Staines pressured the much taller Loai Abushaar, closed the distance and repeatedly lifted him from the rear body lock. The final takedown was different. Staines elevated Abushaar and drove him hard into the canvas, knocking him unconscious on impact before following with punches.

The official finish in Staines vs. Abushaar came at 1:01 of Round 1. More importantly, it went into the record books as the first slam knockout in Contender Series history.

 

 

Staines had entered the night as the clear favorite and one of the most established prospects on the card, having already built experience through Cage Warriors, OKTAGON and a long amateur career. But there is a difference between arriving as the expected winner and producing a finish that immediately circulates well beyond the Contender Series audience.

This was the latter. Dana White had no hesitation giving Staines a UFC contract.

Ian Escuza wins in 32 seconds, but an illegal knee overshadows the finish

Ian Escuza maintained his perfect professional record against Luca Borando, but the result became the most controversial moment of DWCS Week 8.

Escuza overwhelmed Borando almost immediately. The Peruvian hurt him with a knee, swarmed as Borando tried to recover and forced the stoppage just 32 seconds into Escuza vs. Borando.

 

 

The problem was one of the knees in the finishing sequence. Video showed Escuza striking Borando with a knee while Borando was grounded. Referee Herb Dean did not stop the action for the foul, and the official result remained a first-round TKO.

 

 

Dana White later made clear that he disagreed with how the situation had been handled and believed the sequence should not simply have stood as it did. According to post-event reports, matchmaker Sean Shelby pushed for Escuza to receive a contract despite White's concerns.

The contract was ultimately awarded. Escuza therefore leaves Week 8 still officially undefeated and now on the UFC roster, but the Borando finish will probably remain attached to the illegal-knee discussion whenever his Contender Series appearance is revisited.

Adama Diop upsets Zaurbek Sabanov — then gets torn apart by Dana White

No result did more damage to the betting board than Adama Diop beating Zaurbek Sabanov.

Sabanov entered as a massive favorite after an unbeaten start to his professional career. Diop was available at roughly +400 or longer depending on the sportsbook, making him easily one of the biggest underdogs on the Week 8 card.

The fight itself was messy, exhausting and very heavyweight. Sabanov had success early, but his pace deteriorated badly. Diop kept pressing, survived the rough exchanges and eventually overwhelmed him against the fence with punches for a TKO at 2:13 of Round 2.

 

 

The result of Diop vs. Sabanov was a legitimate upset. The contract announcement that followed was even more unusual.

White openly criticized Diop's striking, the overall quality of the fight and the likelihood that the same approach would work against UFC heavyweights. Yet after explaining that Diop was already 31 and that heavyweight remains an unpredictable division, he gave him the opportunity anyway.

 

 

 

It made Diop one of the rare Contender Series contract winners to be publicly criticized so severely immediately before hearing his name called.

 

 

Whatever White thought of the performance, the broader significance is straightforward: Diop's contract makes him the first Senegalese fighter signed to the UFC.

Aieza Bertolso leaves no doubt against Camila Reynoso

If Diop and Escuza required discussion before receiving their contracts, Aieza Bertolso did not.

The unbeaten LFA strawweight champion looked like the heavy favorite she was against Camila Reynoso. Bertolso took the fight to the mat, controlled position and worked into an inverted D'Arce choke that forced the tap at 3:02 of the opening round.

 

 

The Bertolso vs. Reynoso result moved Bertolso to 8-0 and added a UFC contract to a résumé that already included the LFA title and two IMMAF world championships.

Of the four contracts awarded at Week 8, hers required the least explanation. She was brought in as one of the card's most highly credentialed prospects and performed accordingly.

Week 8 was originally supposed to feature five bouts, but the late cancellation of Bulaid vs. Visconde reduced the event to four. Every remaining matchup ended inside the distance.

UFC contracts were awarded to George Staines, Adama Diop, Ian Escuza and Aieza Bertolso.

We missed the two upsets: Escuza beat our Borando pick, while Diop produced by far the biggest surprise by stopping heavily favored Sabanov. The Visconde-Bulaid prediction never got a chance to play out after the bout was postponed.
