Almost two decades after Fedor Emelianenko vs. Randy Couture became one of the biggest fights MMA never managed to make, the two heavyweight legends have somehow found themselves in the same conversation again.
Emelianenko and Couture were both on hand in New York for the launch of Scott Coker's new Ki MMA promotion, which is expected to begin holding events in 2027. Asked about competing again and the major opponents who got away during his career, Fedor made it clear that Couture still interests him.
Emelianenko said he continues to train while coaching his team and would consider competing again if the right opportunity made sense. When the choice was put to him between Couture and Brock Lesnar, another blockbuster heavyweight matchup that never happened, Fedor picked “The Natural.”
“I believe Randy would be much more interesting as a fighter,” Emelianenko said. “I'm ready if he's ready.”
There is no Fedor vs. Couture fight officially announced, and at their respective ages this is very different from the dream fight MMA fans spent years asking for in the late 2000s. Still, hearing the words at all is remarkable considering how much effort once went into trying to make the matchup happen.
Why Fedor Emelianenko vs Randy Couture never happened
To understand why a few words from Fedor in 2026 have generated so much attention, you have to go back to 2007.
Couture was the UFC heavyweight champion after returning from retirement, defeating Tim Sylvia for the belt and then successfully defending it against Gabriel Gonzaga. At 44, he had already accomplished almost everything available to him inside the UFC.
The heavyweight fight he really wanted was outside it.
Emelianenko had established himself as the dominant heavyweight of the PRIDE Fighting Championships era and was widely regarded as the leading heavyweight in MMA. The UFC attempted to sign him after PRIDE's collapse, but no deal was completed.
Couture responded dramatically. In October 2007, he announced that he was leaving the UFC, relinquishing the heavyweight championship and stepping away while he still had fights remaining on his promotional agreement. The inability to secure a fight with Fedor was one of the central reasons Couture gave for the decision.
What followed was not a simple case of a champion becoming a free agent.
The UFC maintained that Couture remained under contract, and the dispute moved into legal proceedings. Couture wanted to reach the point where a Fedor fight could be negotiated outside the UFC; the promotion insisted that his existing deal still prevented that from happening.
For much of 2008, Fedor vs. Couture remained a genuine possibility in theory and an extremely complicated fight to make in practice. The fighters even met and publicly expressed interest in facing one another.
Eventually, Couture abandoned the legal battle and reached a new agreement with the UFC. Instead of fighting Fedor, he returned in November 2008 to defend the UFC heavyweight championship against Brock Lesnar.
Lesnar stopped Couture in the second round and became UFC heavyweight champion.
That effectively closed the most realistic window for Fedor vs. Couture.
Fedor and Couture went down completely different heavyweight paths
While Couture returned to the UFC, Fedor continued competing outside the promotion.
His post-PRIDE career took him through other organizations before he eventually joined Strikeforce, where Scott Coker was already one of the most important promoters working outside the UFC.
That Coker connection is part of what makes the current Ki MMA setting feel strangely appropriate. He promoted Fedor during the Strikeforce years, later worked with him again, and now both Emelianenko and Couture were present for the launch of Coker's latest MMA venture.
None of that means Coker has booked the fight. It simply puts three of the central figures from that era back in the same room while Fedor openly says he would still be interested.
Randy Couture has not fought since Lyoto Machida retired him in 2011
The obvious obstacle is time.
Couture is now 63 years old and has not competed professionally since UFC 129 on April 30, 2011.
He entered that fight against Lyoto Machida already intending it to be his final appearance. Machida made the ending unforgettable, landing a jumping front kick in the second round that knocked Couture out and brought one of the most decorated careers in UFC history to a close.

Couture retired with a 19-11 professional record and championships in both the UFC heavyweight and light heavyweight divisions. More importantly for any discussion of a comeback, he has spent more than 15 years outside professional competition.
That makes a 2027 return far more complicated than simply deciding that the matchup still sounds fun. Any attempt to stage a sanctioned fight would raise obvious licensing, medical and safety questions, particularly for a 63-year-old athlete returning after such a long absence.
Fedor Emelianenko is retired too, but he says he never stopped training
Fedor is substantially younger than Couture, although “younger” is relative in this case.
Emelianenko is approaching 50 and has not competed since 2023. His final MMA appearance came against Ryan Bader, the same opponent who had already stopped him once before.

Fedor's comments in New York suggest retirement has not meant leaving the gym. He said he continues training alongside the fighters he coaches and believes he can still compete if an offer is worthwhile.
Interestingly, he did not limit that possibility to MMA. Emelianenko also indicated that boxing appeals to him, which leaves an important unanswered question hanging over the Couture conversation: if this matchup ever became serious, would it actually be an MMA fight?
No ruleset, date, location or agreement between the fighters has been announced.
Fedor says Randy Couture interests him more than Brock Lesnar
Couture isn't the only famous heavyweight missing from Fedor's résumé.
A fight with Brock Lesnar became another enormous “what if” after Lesnar emerged as UFC heavyweight champion and negotiations to bring Emelianenko into the promotion repeatedly failed.
Asked to choose between the two in 2026, however, Fedor did not hesitate to lean toward Couture.
That makes sense historically. Lesnar vs. Fedor would have been enormous commercially, but Fedor vs. Couture was the matchup the two fighters themselves spent years openly trying to make happen. Couture's 2007 departure from the UFC was tied directly to his desire to fight Emelianenko, and the unresolved matchup followed both men long after the realistic competitive window had passed.
Could Fedor Emelianenko vs Randy Couture actually happen in Ki MMA?
For now, this is an expression of interest, not a fight announcement.
Ki MMA provides an obvious reason the subject has resurfaced. Scott Coker is launching a new promotion, both legends appeared at its New York unveiling, and Fedor publicly left the door open to competing again.
But several major pieces are missing.
Couture has not been announced for a comeback fight. There is no confirmed Fedor contract, no date, no venue and no agreed ruleset for Fedor vs. Couture. The age gap is also less important than the actual numbers: Fedor is nearing 50, while Couture is 63 and has been retired since 2011.
That means the modern version could never be the same fight fans wanted in 2007, when Couture was UFC heavyweight champion and Fedor was coming out of his legendary PRIDE run.
Still, MMA has a habit of bringing old ideas back long after everyone assumes they're dead. Nearly 20 years after contractual fights, promoter negotiations and competing organizations prevented Fedor Emelianenko vs. Randy Couture from happening, one half of the matchup is once again saying yes.
