Francis Ngannou casts doubt on 2025 MMA return, says PFL still lacks an opponent

Francis N'Gannou has made it clear that fans shouldn’t expect him back in the cage anytime soon, as his future in the PFL remains stalled.

The former UFC heavyweight champion has competed just once in mixed martial arts since walking away from the promotion in 2023. After his departure, Ngannou shifted focus toward boxing, famously pushing Tyson Fury to the limit before being stopped by Anthony Joshua. He eventually debuted in the PFL last year, where he defeated Renan Ferreira in dominant fashion at the promotion’s “Battle of the Giants” showcase (Fight).

Despite that successful debut, Ngannou now says there are still “no plans” for him to fight in 2025. In a recent interview, he admitted that even after reaching out, the PFL has yet to put an opponent in front of him. “I don’t think they have anyone lined up,” he admitted. “I’ve sent messages, tried to get something moving, but nothing yet. I know they mentioned Vadim Nemkov, but it didn’t happen. I thought maybe the champion of the tournament would be an option, but right now, nothing looks certain.”

His comments also came shortly after speculation about a UFC comeback was shut down, with Ngannou stressing that his time in the Octagon is firmly behind him. Coach Eric Nicksick had floated the idea, but “The Predator” made it clear he isn’t looking back.

Still, Ngannou has options. While the PFL remains quiet, boxing continues to be on his radar. He told Ariel Helwani that his team is already exploring a possible clash with Deontay Wilder — a fight that could bring him the first boxing win of his career. “We’re setting things up,” Ngannou said. “Talks will start soon.”

For now, MMA fans will have to wait as Ngannou balances his combat sports future. Whether it’s back in the cage with the PFL or under the bright lights of boxing, the former UFC champion is keeping his options open.
