Chael Sonnen Criticizes Mackenzie Dern’s Missed Opportunities in MMA
Chael Sonnen has shared some harsh words about Mackenzie Dern, suggesting that the UFC standout has not fully embraced opportunities to elevate her career. Speaking on his show "Good Guy/Bad Guy," Sonnen dissected Dern’s post-fight decision-making following her win over Amanda Ribas at UFC Fight Night 249.
After securing a Round 3 submission victory in the main event, Dern (16-5 MMA, 11-5 UFC) seemed content with her performance but expressed no urgency to call for a title shot. According to Sonnen, this lack of ambition is emblematic of missed chances throughout her career. "I can’t point to a single moment where Mackenzie grabbed the mic and turned it into something impactful," he said.
Sonnen also reflected on a personal anecdote, claiming he once offered Dern a grappling match against Miesha Tate before her UFC debut. Despite the potential exposure and financial gain, Dern declined, opting to focus on MMA. “That was her chance to make a splash and she let it go,” Sonnen noted.
Although Dern’s resume now boasts back-to-back wins and four UFC Fight Night main events, Sonnen believes she hasn’t maximized her star power. He pointed to her decision to train in California under Jason Parillo, leaving behind her father, Wellington "Megaton" Dias, as another example of questionable choices. “She’s not connecting the dots between what makes dollars and what makes sense,” he added.
Sonnen acknowledged Dern’s likability and the support she garners from fans but emphasized her inability to capitalize on her platform. "She’s talented and compelling, but she doesn’t understand the business side of the sport," Sonnen concluded. Whether Dern will pivot her approach remains to be seen, but Sonnen’s critique underscores the fine line between talent and marketability in MMA.
