Sean Strickland Calls Out Jai Opetaia, Threatens UFC Exit for Boxing

Sean Strickland Calls Out Jai Opetaia, Threatens UFC Exit for Boxing

Sean Strickland wants a boxing title, and he apparently doesn't care whose belt he has to take to get one.

The reigning UFC middleweight champion has called out undefeated cruiserweight boxer Jai Opetaia, claiming he could easily defeat the Australian under boxing rules. The challenge came during a lengthy October 8 video in which Strickland criticized UFC fighter pay and made it clear that he wants to pursue opportunities outside MMA.

Strickland specifically mentioned Zuffa Boxing, the boxing promotion associated with UFC CEO Dana White, as a possible destination while he remains under contract. He also expressed interest in fighting Jake Paul, potentially for a much larger payday than he believes he can earn in the Octagon.

Despite the strong language, Strickland has not officially left the UFC, and no boxing match against Opetaia has been announced.

Sean Strickland claims he can beat Jai Opetaia in boxing

Strickland has never lacked confidence in his hands, but challenging one of the best cruiserweights in professional boxing is a considerable step beyond his usual trash talk.

The American pointed to his two UFC middleweight championship victories and the number of leading contenders he has already faced as reasons he wants a different challenge.

He said he wants to add a boxing championship to his accomplishments and believes his striking would translate successfully against professional boxers.

With Jake Paul also on his list of potential opponents, Strickland addressed the contractual problem that could prevent him from pursuing an outside promotion.

"I'm under contract. Fine, I'll go to Zuffa. I'll go beat your cruiserweight champ, easy," Strickland said.

That cruiserweight champion is Jai Opetaia, the undefeated Australian who became Zuffa Boxing's inaugural 200-pound titleholder earlier in 2026.

It was a striking claim considering that Strickland has no professional boxing record and normally competes at 185 pounds in MMA.

Why Sean Strickland wants to leave the UFC

The callout was only part of a broader argument Strickland has been making about fighter compensation.

In his latest video, the middleweight champion accused the UFC of failing to reward fighters adequately for the damage they accumulate during their careers. His central complaint is that athletes can build successful careers and championship legacies but still feel financially compelled to continue competing after their best years are behind them.

Strickland's frustration is not simply about hypothetical future earnings. He regained the UFC middleweight championship by defeating previously unbeaten Khamzat Chimaev via split decision at UFC 328 in May, becoming a two-time champion.

His next title defense has since become complicated by negotiations over his compensation. A potential rematch with Nassourdine Imavov has been discussed, but no agreement has been finalized.

Strickland has indicated that he does not intend to accept another fight on terms he considers inadequate. He has even raised the possibility of vacating his title and completing his remaining UFC contractual obligations before pursuing other opportunities.

In his latest comments, he went further, suggesting that if the promotion insists on keeping him in MMA, he could simply adopt a cautious, low-risk approach to finish his contract and collect his paychecks.

That would represent a considerable change in attitude from a fighter who has built his reputation around constant pressure, durability and an unusually confrontational public persona.

Jai Opetaia's undefeated boxing record makes the challenge a huge gamble

Strickland's claim becomes considerably more ambitious when looking at what Opetaia has accomplished.

The Australian southpaw owns a 31-0 professional boxing record with 24 knockouts and has established himself among the leading fighters in the cruiserweight division.

Opetaia captured the inaugural Zuffa Boxing cruiserweight championship in March 2026, dominating Brandon Glanton over 12 rounds at the Meta APEX in Las Vegas. All three judges scored the fight 119-106 in his favor.

He followed that performance with another significant victory in September, stopping Noel Mikaelian in the ninth round while defending his Zuffa Boxing championship and The Ring title.

Those results underline the enormous difference in professional boxing experience between the two men.

Strickland is an accomplished MMA striker, particularly known for his jab, defensive awareness, upright stance and ability to maintain pressure over five rounds. His victory over Israel Adesanya in 2023 demonstrated how effectively he can use those skills against an elite MMA kickboxer.

But Opetaia has spent his professional career developing specifically for boxing. His southpaw combinations, footwork, distance management and ability to deliver sustained offense against experienced 200-pound boxers create an entirely different challenge.

Strickland would also have to compete without the threat of kicks, takedowns or other MMA techniques, although his own fighting style already relies more heavily on boxing than that of many UFC champions.

None of this means Strickland couldn't attempt the transition. It does explain why claiming he would beat Opetaia easily is considerably more difficult to justify than simply believing he could become competitive in professional boxing.

Jake Paul could offer Strickland another route into boxing

Opetaia isn't the only boxer Strickland has mentioned during his dispute with the UFC.

He has also expressed interest in facing Jake Paul, whose boxing career has repeatedly brought MMA fighters into high-profile crossover events.

Paul responded to Strickland's public complaints by suggesting that he contact Most Valuable Promotions once he becomes a free agent.

Financially, that might be a more realistic attraction for Strickland than immediately challenging an undefeated world-class cruiserweight. A crossover event involving an established UFC champion would have considerable name recognition, regardless of how competitive the matchup might be.

However, the same obstacle applies to both possibilities: Strickland remains under UFC contract.

Zuffa Boxing's connection to Dana White could theoretically provide a different route to arranging a boxing opportunity, but being associated with the same executive does not automatically give UFC fighters permission to compete there.

There has been no indication that the UFC has approved Strickland to fight Opetaia, Paul or anyone else under professional boxing rules.

What happens to Sean Strickland's UFC middleweight title?

For now, the immediate question is less about Opetaia and more about whether Strickland can reach an agreement with the UFC.

The middleweight division still has contenders waiting for championship opportunities, with Nassourdine Imavov among those pushing for a shot. Strickland's compensation dispute has complicated the scheduling of his first defense since reclaiming the belt from Chimaev.

Strickland could ultimately negotiate better terms and remain in MMA. He could also pursue an agreement allowing him to box, although that would require cooperation from the promotion.

What he cannot currently do is simply treat his UFC contract as finished because he has publicly declared that he wants to move on.

Until an actual agreement or release is announced, Sean Strickland vs. Jai Opetaia remains a challenge issued on social media rather than a scheduled boxing match.
