Paddy McCorry: From DWCS Rejection to Cage Warriors Champion | CW 210
Winning on Dana White's Contender Series was supposed to bring Paddy McCorry one step closer to the UFC. Instead, the Belfast middleweight left Las Vegas without a contract, despite winning every round of his fight. Five months later, he was celebrating a first-round stoppage in Dublin with the Cage Warriors world middleweight championship around his waist.
In Struggle Breeds Success, McCorry reflects on the sacrifices, disappointments and hard work behind that journey. The documentary follows his path from DWCS 2025 Week 6 to winning the Cage Warriors title, ahead of his first championship defence against Gustavo Sousa at CW 210 Dublin on September 26, 2026.
Paddy McCorry's Journey Through The Ultimate Fighter and DWCS
McCorry's pursuit of a UFC contract began before his Contender Series appearance. In 2024, he competed on Season 32 of The Ultimate Fighter, representing Team Grasso in the middleweight tournament.
He submitted Mark Hulme with a first-round guillotine choke in the quarterfinals before losing to eventual finalist Robert Valentin by submission in the semifinals. The defeat ended his tournament run, but McCorry continued building his professional career through Cage Warriors.
His next opportunity to impress the UFC came on September 16, 2025, when he faced South Korean middleweight In Soo Hwang at the UFC APEX in Las Vegas.
McCorry delivered a composed performance, controlling the distance with his striking and outworking Hwang throughout the contest. All three judges scored the fight 30-27 in his favour, extending his professional winning streak to five.
It was a clear victory, but it wasn't enough to earn him a UFC contract. Four other fighters received deals that evening, leaving McCorry to return home without the opportunity he had travelled to Las Vegas to secure.

Turning DWCS Disappointment Into a Cage Warriors Title Opportunity
McCorry has spoken openly about how difficult the aftermath of his Contender Series victory was. Despite winning convincingly, he was disappointed with his performance and heartbroken by the decision not to offer him a contract.
In an interview with The Irish News before his Cage Warriors title fight, he recalled the silence as he and his team walked back to their transport after the contract announcements. Rather than celebrating a UFC deal, they were leaving Las Vegas with another victory but no clear indication of when the next opportunity would arrive.
That disappointment became part of his preparation for the biggest fight of his career.
McCorry had previously discussed the difficulty of balancing professional MMA with his working and personal life. Training at Fight Academy Ireland demanded considerable commitment, and he acknowledged that his focus on improving as a fighter could sometimes come at the expense of other areas of his life.
His philosophy was straightforward: setbacks could become motivation if he used them properly. The phrase Struggle Breeds Success, which he had used to describe his approach to difficult periods, became an especially fitting description of his journey toward championship gold.
How Paddy McCorry Won the Cage Warriors Middleweight Championship
McCorry returned to Dublin on February 21, 2026, to challenge reigning middleweight champion Dario Bellandi at Cage Warriors 200.
The Italian champion had successfully defended his title three times and represented a significant test for McCorry, who was looking to capture his first professional championship in front of an Irish crowd at the RDS.
The fight lasted just 2:28.
McCorry landed a perfectly timed punch that sent Bellandi to the canvas before following up with ground-and-pound. Referee Rich Mitchell stopped the contest in the opening round, crowning McCorry the new Cage Warriors middleweight champion.
It was the emphatic finish he had been searching for after his two decision victories in 2025. The celebration that followed, with McCorry overcome by emotion in the cage, marked the culmination of his journey from Contender Series disappointment to a championship victory on home soil.
More importantly, the result changed his immediate career prospects. Rather than waiting for another opportunity to impress UFC decision-makers, McCorry now had a championship to defend and a leading position in Cage Warriors' middleweight division.
Paddy McCorry vs. Gustavo Sousa: First Title Defence at CW 210 Dublin
McCorry returns to the RDS on September 26 to headline Cage Warriors 210, making his first defence of the middleweight title against Brazilian challenger Gustavo Sousa.
Sousa enters the contest as a late replacement for Julio Spadaccini, who was originally scheduled to challenge McCorry for the championship. The Brazilian brings a professional record of 7-2, with all seven victories coming by knockout, TKO or submission.
His most recent appearance came in August 2026, when he stopped Everton Freitas with punches in the first round at SFT 64. That finishing record gives McCorry a different challenge from the one he faced against Hwang on the Contender Series.
For McCorry, the middleweight championship fight against Sousa is an opportunity to establish himself as a defending champion rather than simply the fighter who produced a memorable knockout to win the belt.
The Dublin card also features unbeaten Irish featherweight Maximus Lally against Brazilian veteran João Saldanha in the co-main event. Their featherweight matchup adds another prominent Irish prospect to the event as Cage Warriors returns to the venue where McCorry captured his championship in February.
