RIZIN 54: Shoko Sato vs. Patchy Mix | RIZIN Confessions

RIZIN Fighting Federation turns the spotlight toward one of the most intriguing fights at RIZIN 54 as veteran Shoko Sato prepares to meet former Bellator bantamweight champion Patchy Mix. This edition of RIZIN Confessions goes behind the matchup before the two experienced 135-pounders collide at Toyota Arena Tokyo.

Shoko Sato vs. Patchy Mix at RIZIN 54

The Shoko Sato vs. Patchy Mix fight comes at a fascinating point in both careers. Sato remains one of Japanese MMA’s most experienced bantamweights, with nearly two decades of professional competition behind him. His career has taken him through Shooto, ONE Championship and now RIZIN, where the 38-year-old continues to compete against high-level opposition.

Mix arrives in Tokyo with a very different story. Once considered one of the world’s elite bantamweights, the former Bellator champion won 20 of his first 21 professional fights before a difficult UFC run changed the momentum of his career. After two decision losses in the UFC, Mix moved to featherweight for his RIZIN debut but was stopped by Kyoma Akimoto at RIZIN.52.

Now he returns to the division where he built his reputation. For Mix, RIZIN 54 is an opportunity to show that his elite grappling, length and submission game can still make him a serious factor at bantamweight. For Sato, beating a former world champion would add another major name to an already lengthy résumé.

RIZIN Confessions adds another layer to the fight

RIZIN Confessions has become an important part of the promotion’s identity, giving fans more than the usual press-conference clips and fight-week soundbites. The series follows fighters away from the ring, building the personalities and motivations behind major RIZIN matchups before fight night.

That format fits Sato vs. Mix particularly well. Mix is attempting to stop a three-fight losing streak and rebuild after a rapid change in fortunes, while Sato is trying to prove that experience and longevity can still overcome a former champion entering what should be one of the biggest fights of his recent career.

A stacked RIZIN 54 card in Tokyo

Sato vs. Mix is only part of a deep RIZIN 54 lineup. The main event features Kleber Koike vs. Kyoma Akimoto in a crucial featherweight fight, while the card also includes Joji Goto vs. Azizbek Temirov, Yuki Ito vs. Alibek Gadzhammatov and Arata Mizuno vs. Kaiwen Li.

RIZIN’s huge 2026 schedule continues

RIZIN 54 also leads into an even bigger night at Super RIZIN 5 on September 10 in Osaka. Undefeated RIZIN featherweight champion Razhabali Shaydullaev faces former Bellator champion AJ McKee Jr. in a historic double-title fight with both the RIZIN and PFL featherweight championships at stake.

The Shaydullaev vs. McKee fight underlines how ambitious RIZIN’s 2026 calendar has become. Before Osaka, however, attention returns to Tokyo — and to a Shoko Sato vs. Patchy Mix matchup where both men have plenty to gain and very little room for a forgettable performance.
