Arman Tsarukyan might not bring the viral energy or fanfare of Paddy Pimblett, but if you ask Demetrious Johnson, he’s the one who deserves the next shot at Ilia Topuria. Speaking after UFC 317, the former UFC and ONE champ weighed in on the future of the UFC lightweight division.
With Islam Makhachev vacating his title and Topuria claiming the belt with a highlight-reel knockout of Charles Oliveira, speculation is swirling about who’s next. While UFC fans and execs are teasing a money matchup between Topuria and Pimblett, Johnson isn’t sold on the idea.
“Arman Tsarukyan is the clear #1 contender,” Johnson said on his YouTube channel. “Pimblett might sell more, but the performances don’t lie.”
Tsarukyan earned a split decision win over Oliveira at UFC 300 and was slated to fight for the title at UFC 311 before being pulled due to a last-minute medical issue. Still, he made weight and served as backup for UFC 317, where Topuria won gold.
In contrast, Pimblett’s resume lacks elite names. Though popular, his toughest tests don’t match the pedigree of Tsarukyan, Justin Gaethje, or Beneil Dariush.
Johnson’s comments have fueled the growing debate over merit vs marketability in UFC matchmaking. While a Topuria vs. Pimblett fight could sell well, many feel it undermines sport integrity if deserving contenders like Tsarukyan are sidelined.
As the UFC decides what direction to take, one thing’s clear: Arman Tsarukyan has the backing of one of MMA’s greatest minds—and he’s not backing down from his claim to the title shot.
