Alexandre Pantoja Sees Himself in Joshua Van: “He Might Be My Toughest Test Yet”
Reigning UFC flyweight champion Alexandre Pantoja has his eyes set on rising star Joshua Van after another dominant title defense at UFC 317. Fresh off submitting Kai Kara-France in the third round, Pantoja used his post-fight media appearance to praise the 23-year-old prospect — and even compared him to his younger self.
“This guy is living the life I dreamed of,” Pantoja said. “He’s sharp, composed, and hungry — not like the chaos I used to bring to the cage.” Van’s recent win over Brandon Royval has vaulted him into the flyweight title conversation, following an impressive run that also includes victories over top names like Bruno Silva.
Pantoja acknowledged Van’s wrestling defense, fight IQ, and discipline — traits he says he wishes he had earlier in his career. “He might be my toughest test yet,” the champion admitted. Still, Pantoja isn’t easing off. “Monday I’m back in the gym. I’m not the champ in my mind — I’m the hunter again.”
Could Demetrious Johnson Be Next?
With several title defenses under his belt, Pantoja is closing in on the legacy of Demetrious Johnson, the most dominant flyweight in UFC history. He previously called out DJ after beating Kai Asakura at UFC 310, but Johnson remains unofficially retired.
“The division has evolved,” Pantoja said. “We’ve got elite flyweights from every continent now — Brazil, Japan, Africa, Russia. This belt means more than ever.”
Whether the next title defense is Joshua Van or a surprise challenger, one thing’s clear: Alexandre Pantoja’s reign is far from over — and the UFC flyweight division is in its golden age.
