Did Jon Jones Walk Away from $30 Million to Avoid Tom Aspinall?

Jon Jones’ Alleged $30M Turn-Down Raises UFC Speculation

Recent reports from trusted MMA insider Ariel Helwani have stirred major controversy in the UFC world. According to Helwani, legendary light heavyweight-turned-heavyweight champion Jon Jones may have walked away from a $30 million payday to avoid a unification bout with current heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall.

Jones’ career has long been a mix of brilliance inside the cage and drama outside it. While many consider him the greatest fighter in MMA history, controversies involving legal issues and PED rumors have clouded his legacy. His refusal to meet Aspinall in the Octagon — despite Aspinall holding the interim belt — has only fueled talk that he might be dodging the British powerhouse.

After claiming the heavyweight title in 2023, Jones defended it just once, beating veteran Stipe Miocic in a fight that critics say Miocic didn’t deserve. At that time, Aspinall was already interim champ, and many fans wanted the unification bout instead.

Helwani revealed that Jones initially named an astronomical figure — reportedly in the $30 million range — as the price for fighting Aspinall. Surprisingly, the UFC and its partners, including possible Saudi Arabian backers, agreed to the amount. But just days later, Jones allegedly backed out, citing second thoughts. “I think he was hoping they wouldn’t meet the number so he could say he tried,” Helwani told “Impaulsive.”

This isn’t the first time Jones has tested the UFC’s limits. Years earlier, he tried to leverage a similar high payday for a fight with then-heavyweight champ Francis N’Gannou, but that deal never materialized. In Aspinall’s case, however, the UFC called his bluff — and he still declined.

If these claims are accurate, it’s hard for fans to ignore the optics: turning down $30 million, win or lose, gives weight to the idea that Jones might be avoiding the fight that could hand him his first legitimate defeat.
